Shopping online – Yay or Nay?

Shopping online – Yay or Nay?

Apart from shelter and food, clothing is also one of the basic necessities of every man. It doesn’t matter the class one belongs to, shopping for clothes is something that is almost inevitable. The difference in class may begin to show in terms of the ‘quality’ of the clothes a man higher in the societal ladder would have that the bottom classed man may not possess. With the advent of internet and improved technology, shopping has moved from the regular offline stores and market purchase to online purchases. While still maintaining their offline stores, fashion outlets and stores have also made themselves available online for those who would prefer a more convenient way of shopping.

In a country like Nigeria where eCommerce recently became the trend with companies like DealDey, Jumia, Konga, etc coming up with convenient ways to shop for the best items online. A trend was noticed amongst youths in Nigeria recently where they preferred to order for items online and have these items delivered to them at their homes or office. Rather than facing the ‘stress’ of going to the market, they would rather see a nice dress pictured on a model; click to buy it and get it delivered.

A questionnaire was sent to a couple of these online stores and eCommerce companies, and from our feedback, we discovered that the ‘Fashion’ category is always the most difficult category because of its sensitivity. We also gathered that they experience the highest number of ‘Returned goods’ in the fashion category due to the basic reason of ‘The item delivered not being the same as the one displayed‘; buyers could get a totally or slightly different design different from the one which was displayed, buyers could get a different size from the size opted for, there could be a slight difference in colour, amongst many other reasons.

Now this is the question for everyone:

  1. would you rather buy your fashion items online?
  2. Or would you rather be physically present at the store to see what you are buying, trying it out to see if it looks good on you before paying for it?
  3.  If you have been buying online, what’s your experience like? Good or bad?
  4. Is buying clothes and shoes or other fashion items online the way forward?

Your comments would be appreciated…

NAY – As far as shopping for my children’s clothes online for me is concerned, I’d rather prefer to go in store. They get to try on the clothes before paying for them.
